OHW? Gatland Boots

OHW? Gatland Boots Review

Continuing with the recent shoe theme on Kingsdown Roots this next one is by a new brand I’ve not heard of before called OHW? Here’s an excerpt from their website:

ohw? is the shared vision of two footwear professionals with many years of experience. Our aim is simple – to bring a fresh approach to men’s footwear with contemporary and functional designs manufactured in our own factory in China. Unlike many companies that source their footwear from outside suppliers, we have full control over how our shoes are made. We emphasize this because we believe our customers should know the provenance of the shoes they buy.

When deciding what to buy I had a look through their website and came across these very nice looking boots called Gatland W0326. What particularly caught my attention was the combination of materials used, a mixture of black full grain leather and suede. I’ve not seen so many shoe designs mixing suede and leather before, I also liked the look of the white rim around the sole and the light brown detail on the back of the heel.

The boots arrived very promptly in a nice thick shoe box, wrapped in tissue paper which is necessary with genuine leather otherwise they’ll scratch in transit. The boots look very nice in person, lightweight with some great features in the thick laces and unusual pyramid pattern/grip (see photos below). To be 100% honest I had trouble fitting them on my feet, mainly because the top of the boot is thin and doesn’t stretch so you have to undo all the laces excessively. However once I had them on they were very comfortable and felt firm around my foot, the sizing is slightly larger than you would normally go for, about half a size (if you’re a size 10 go for a 9 and a half). Overall these are a nice casual boot, I will be keeping my eye on OHW? in the future.

Hi Matt, once the premium leather used in the upper and laces softens with wear, they’ll be much easier to slip on. The slim ankle design is deliberate so that the boots work well with slim fit trousers, as you have recommended. We only do full sizes and yes, our sizing is generous, so if you are a half size you can go down to the nearest full size. We’re pleased you like your boots 🙂
